Synopsis:

Mortality data are used by Government bodies, researchers and clinicians for policy-making, assessment of the efficacy of intervention strategies, public health funding and educational activities. The data are the basis for reporting on national health experience to the World Health Organization. The roles played by different stakeholders including state and territory jurisdictions, competition for funding from other sectors in health and the increasing use of information technology are a few of the factors that impact on the quality and availability of mortality data.

The workshop will address past, present and future issues related to the collection, collation, dissemination and publication of indigenous mortality data in Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-pacific regions. Those working with mortality data in other countries, public health researchers, indigenous health workers and those involved in the collection and processing of mortality data should attend as it aims to bring the producers and users of mortality data together for discussion on key issues essential to the production of high quality data on causes of death.

Sessions will include research presentations and open discussion.

WELCOME

The Australasian Mortality Data Interest Group invites you to its 5th Mortality Data Workshop.
Monday 24 November 2008
QUT Kelvin Grove, Brisbane, Australia.

Theme: Indigenous Mortality

Aims: The inequalities between the health of indigenous and non-indigenous peoples is well documented. Information used to report on indigenous mortality, and its subsequent analysis, presents a number of special challenges to those organisations responsible for collecting and processing the data and the researchers who use it. The aim of this workshop is to present how some of these challenges have been met and to discuss possibilities to further identify and close existing gaps in the collection and reporting of indigenous mortality statistics.

Program Overview: The Workshop will address issues associated with the collection, collation, dissemination and quality of indigenous mortality data. Sessions will include research presentations and open forum discussion on “Closing the Gaps in Indigenous Mortality Statistics” and other issues raised during the course of the day.

WORKSHOP PROGRAM & SPEAKERS:
The Workshop Program & Speakers will be confirmed closer to the Workshop commencement date.

Below are Accepted Presentations as at 2 October 2008:
